Reprised and posted yet again!

white noise vs. unmitigated exhibitionism

This is supposed to be a blog…so here goes…

We, the collective down here at the Austin branch of PoOR YoRiCK CeNTRaL, are frequently asked why PoOR YoRiCK don't 'play more places'.  This question is usually prefaced by some statement of surprise that we are actually a pretty good band.  There are also eventual suggestions of venues, bars, and restaurants in which they themselves would enjoy seeing/hearing us.  Very flattering indeed...and it is nice to know that the PY faithful may indeed want more.  But the truth is (with a small 't') that there are many reasons that go into where and when PY makes its’ appearances...the availability of various members, family obligations, schedule conflicts, real life, etc...  The other ‘Truth’ (note the capital ‘T’) is much simpler...  We get told ‘no’, or get outright ignored, on a frequent basis by those who do the booking.

You see, this is Austin....Swing a dead cat and hit a guitar-playing-songwriting-singer-of-songs.  The proverbial "dime-a-dozen" reference leaps to one’s lips.  And as for being in a band…we’re told that even the Texas legislature has a band…yes, this legislature.  So there is a clutter, a white noise of sorts, above which a musical act must rise in order to become noticed. And if such a musical act wishes to be compensated in some manner, with real money, it can easily be passed up by booking persona for acts that just want a chance to play... for nothin'.

                                       .      .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .

For what it might be worth, the boys-down-at-central, in the PY research center at the head office in Ossipee, NH, have verified a phenomenon, dare we say a ‘characteristic’, of the musically-inclined-performer.  This is referred in the literature as the 'density-acceptance-fear ratio',...or DAFR(?)

(acceptance/fear)+substance intake     =     molecular density while on stage

While occasionally found in the general population at slightly measurable levels, this calculated ratio leaps off the negative scale in persons holding musical instruments,..or otherwise standing in front of microphones.  We shant delve into the self-medicating factors at this point....

                                        .      .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .     .

“So what can I do?” one might ask. "How can I, a rabid fan, get more Poor Yorick into my diet?"   "How many carbs are in a Yorick...or is it gluten-free?"   "Will they ever use the designated hitter in the National League?"   "How long do you have to live in California before moving to Austin?"  "Can you be President and 12-years-old at the same time?" ....all good questions.

But, in the meantime, if any of our adoring fans have a favorite bistro/venue that they'd like to see PY perform in, just drop us a line and we can look into it...AND keep an eye out for the next PY show!!

Patrick Haney Passes Away

I must report, with great sadness, the passing of Patrick Haney earlier today.  Words are inadequate to express what he meant to me and to Poor Yorick, but I'll make a feeble attempt here anyway.   It is perhaps a testament to the man that his loss is so deeply felt half way around the planet.

Along with James Johnson, Patrick and I started this motley little band in 1986, and it was Patrick who became my song-writing partner from that point...

A friend.  A comrade.  A collaborator.  A showman.  A brother.  A lover of all things musical.  A passionate spokesman.  A true citizen of the world.  And for what it might be worth, and for which I will always be grateful….A Yorickian forever.

I hope you know, Patrick, how much you will be missed…and I also hope you know that you can’t quit this band…ever.

All of us with Poor Yorick, as well as my immediate family, send our deepest sympathies and positive thoughts to Patrick's family, including his two lovely ladies,..Daniela and Betty.

And to Patrick...
Ciao and Godspeed dear boy.

Spotlight on Patrick Haney

A little piece of Clown-in-the-Ground nostalgia if we may be permitted...casting an eye back to the dawn of time, when PoOR YoRiCK was contrived, to the days when there were six (count 'em), six of us.

And one of the seminal members who contributed quite a bit of the bands' original repertoire was Patrick Haney, a.k.a "Zoots", a.k.a "Haneyman".  Patrick was certainly a driving force during YoRiCK's primordial phase,...the sole author, or primay author, of a healthy balance of PY stand-by material. His versatility with acoustic guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, and saxophone helped showcase and drive the eclectic, on-stage circus.

May we submit for your consideration (check out) a live version of the Callaway-esque, sax-driven, blues style on "Ruby Lee"... Or... the raucous, gravelly, ranting feline-ode, "Kool City Kat".  Though Patrick had been living in Rome (the one in Italy) with his wife and daughter for over a decade, he
had occasionally popped over state-side for surprise appearances with PY.  The band has continued to perform, and will continue to perform, such Haney-conceived songs as "Best Gova'ment Money Can Buy" ...still as topical as the day it was written.

Yes ladies and gentle-germs, again we proudly ask your consideration, and anticipate your approval...we give you a PoOR YoRiCK original,..Patrick Haney.

PoOR YoRiCK in the StUDiO!

A lotta folks have continued to ask when PY might have some of the newer, studio material available on CD/MP3.  We do, in fact, have several titles in the works and have been 'exercising' a few of them from time to time during our live show sound checks.  As far as recording goes, these diamonds-in-the-ruff are currently in 'demo' form right now, but full fledged final gems are beginning to slowly take shape. Some of the new titles (for what it's worth) include:

"We Say Alot", "Long Way Down (Geronimo!)", "Hammer of the Sun", "Far From Fair", "Now You Know", "Junk Drawer" (by our very own James Johnson)...and Woody is penning another opus as well (but that's a secret).

Click on this to listen to a couple cuts on SOUNDCLOUD.

As noted earlier, we don't know when or what this will all be... an emerging EP?.. or the basis for a full-fledged album...still being tossed around by the 'boys-down-at-central'...Stand by.

PoOR YoRiCK in the StUDiO!

Lovely time last night at the Carousel Lounge and a great crowd...we look forward to our next show there on July 25th.

More than a couple of fans were asking last night when PY might have some of our newer, studio material available on CD/MP3.  We do have some titles in the works and have been 'exercising' a few of them from time to time during our sound checks.  They are currently in 'demo' form right now, but full fledged final versions are beginning to slowly take shape. Some titles (for what it's worth) include:

"We Say Alot", "Long Way Down (Geronimo!)", "Hammer of the Sun", "Far From Fair", "Now You Know", "Junk Drawer"...others.

Whether these tunes constitute an emerging EP or the basis for a full-fledged album is still up for debate...Stand by.

Closing thoughts...

Oh well...It would appear that our haunt of these 6 years, Waterloo Ice House (on 38th Street) has closed its doors and gone the way of the dodo.

We want to wish all who sailed in her all the best...as well as a heart-felt 'thanks' for a great 6 years.

Subsequently, our show on this coming Friday, indeed, all of our first Friday shows on 38th street will be no more.

PoOR YoRiCK will carry on, of course, at other venues soon-to-be-announced...for example...

Carousel Lounge
Saturday, March 22nd
7-9pm

Keep up with our full schedule as well as all things "YoRiCK" at the official website.
